IMPACT OF ICT ON MOBILE PHONES AND RURAL LIVELIHOODS

Abstract

This study examined the impact of ICT on mobile phones to rural people living communities. The findings showed that rural communities appreciated the use of mobile phones as it contributes to coordinating access to agricultural inputs, market information, monitor financial transactions, and consultation with agricultural experts, thereby reducing poverty and improving the standard of living in rural areas. Mobile phone expand and strengthen social networks; it increase people’s ability to deal with emergencies and cut down travel costs; and maximize the outcomes of necessary journeys; and amplify efficiency of activities. Phone usage has had positive outcomes and opened opportunities like reduction of costs in doing business and increases productivity by helping rural traders and farmer to secure better markets and prices, and promptly communicate business related information.
